There also are many gas stations throughout the Akwesasne territory, and it would be hazardous if there were to be a tornado, earthquake, or other catastrophe since oil could contaminate groundwater and wetlands. The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Environment Division Environmental Response Team (ERT) has been responding to accidental spills of hazardous materials in Akwesasne since 1993, and could help respond to any storm-related spills.
