Support increased funding to monitor changes in aquatic food web dynamics. Due to past and projected changes to freshwater and marine aquatic systems and conditions, it is essential to establish a baseline of conditions and monitor changes in these conditions in order to establish connection between environmental changes, aquatic species availability, resource health, and human health. Shellfish are one of the key traditional foods the Tribe has been harvesting since time immemorial. The ability for tribal members to harvest these species in their traditional manner, as well as to be able to sell the species commercially, is affected by the presence of harmful algal blooms (HABs). HABs make consumption of these shellfish dangerous. Expanding collaborations with the State of Washington, other jurisdictions, and other Tribes, to monitor the conditions for HABs, increase shellfish testing, and expand education and awareness efforts around HABs, will protect the health and wellness (both physical and cultural) of tribal members.The Tribe can partner with other agencies or implement monitoring of local populations.
