Ensure that all new construction projects and updates to existing infrastructure on Tribal lands take into consideration current and future climate exposures and are built/updated to climate resilient standards. Designing for climate change can limit damage and destruction of homes and protect the health and safety of tribal residents. For homes built in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI), expanding defensible space, enhancing home hardening, using proper and fire resistant building materials, and ensuring appropriate vegetation management around the home can reduce the risk of wildfires and limit their effects on tribal residents. Coastal or shoreline construction could consider recommended parcel and building elevations from flood analyses as well as the most appropriate construction materials. When considering new construction, the Tribe should continue to consider current and future climate exposures and risks.
