To counter this threat [invasive Lake trout], Native Fish Keepers was established in 2017, capitalizing on the economic value of Lake trout, while bringing other substantial benefits to the community such as employment opportunities, support to recreational angling, and supporting food banks within the reservation and surrounding area with donations. Native Fish Keepers harvest and sell lake trout, as well as providing local fish donations to food banks, all while allowing native fish species the opportunity to thrive. While this is a costly operation, and the revenue generated from selling lake trout may never completely offset these costs, the value of protecting such important cultural resources makes it all worthwhile.
