Establish or update adaptive fire management plans, including periodic forest assessments and traditional forest management practices to prevent high intensity wildfires (e.g. prescribed burning, introduction of resilient vegetation), and formalization of chain of command roles. Tribes can pursue management initiatives through the Tribal Forest Protection Act. This action gives tribes the opportunity to initiate projects on Federal lands adjacent to tribal trust lands for the purpose of managing threats to forest resources, such as wildfire, pests, erosion, or disease. The Pala Fire Department is working with PED, BIA, CalFire and Intertribal Long Term Recovery Foundation using FEMA and tribal funds to complete this strategy by 2021.
