As indicated in introductory information in this Plan, the regeneration of trees is critical to the long term, i.e. 100 to 200 year, life of the oak groves. New seedlings discovered within the canopy should be left to grow and perhaps, marked to avoid their accidental destruction by grazing animals. Planting programs to fill in gaps in groves and to expand groves in areas where Coast Live Oaks were previously present is part of the recruitment of younger plants. Younger plants are less likely to become infected by boring insects due to the limited development of bark, and host wood.
